OUR GARMENT OF SUFFERING - LENT 2008
Ours were the sufferings he bore, ours the sorrows he carried .... and through his wounds we are healed. (Isaiah 52) Our Garment of Suffering is symbolic of the various hurt and pain that we all have in our lives; it could be pain of the past, the present, or fear of the future. It could be our own pain or the pain of a loved one. During Lent we asked parishioners to bring a piece of cloth about six inches square and leave it (anonymously) in a basket at the back of the church. The patches of material on this 'Garment' represented the sorrow and suffering of individuals in the parish. These patches were collected and sewn together during Holy Week into one complete garment. On Good Friday the garment was draped over the Cross and left there throughout the Easter Season. At Pentecost the garment was burnt during a special Pentecost Vigil liturgy.
