HOMAGE TO OUR LADY OF ENGLAND

A sonnet by Ian Caws to celebrate 125 years of Norbertine presence in Storrington

These our prayers that have no time or distance Carry resolutions and mysteries. And you know them, the itineraries Of the spirit, the movements of the dance To which we are all invited. Immense Though our labour may become, your care is Around us while autumn downland dozes. Mary, visit our souls in the silence.
Find in us, as a mother will, some love To narrate: as you carried on your arm That ultimate love who brought the divine To earth and graced a meal with things above For us to break new bread, still oven warm, And then, at last, to raise and drink the wine.
