AUGUST NEWS

PAKISTAN FLOOD

We had already held our collection by the time that CAFOD sent their appeal: however they write this as some indication of how the money is being used:

“CAFOD has so far been able to commit around £750k to the initial Caritas relief efforts, this includes £100k released to CAFOD by the British Government within the first 24 hours of the emergency based on their confidence that the church based agencies were able to act quickly and effectively.
Our partners have so far reached 23,000 people - but so many more need our help now and to recover in the long term. With your support, our partners can provide:

* Emergency kits including plastic sheeting, blankets, water purification tablets and soap
* Temporary latrines to improve sanitation and prevent disease from spreading
* Life-saving medicines and emergency health care.

Colette Fearon, our head of Asia programmes says: "We are very concerned by reports of cholera, because we know it can spread quickly in cramped conditions. Our partners have experience of providing relief to people in disasters, so we are confident that we can get help to those that need it most and help them recover in the coming months and years."

JULY NEWS

WORTHING CHURCHES HOMELESS PROJECTS are currently seeking to recruit a volunteer hairdresser to visit their residential projects. There are 52 people accommodated in the projects at any one time. Sue Stevens said ‘We like to have a hairdresser visit the projects regularly to encourage the clients to take a pride in their appearance. It is all part of rebuilding their confidence. Sadly our current hairdresser has moved away. The work entails visiting each of the projects in turn, dedicating about two hours a week (or one day a month) to the work.’

They are also seeking volunteers who could offer a couple of hours gardening a fortnight, some that could help in the shop and some who would like to take on regular breakfast slots at St Clare's Day Centre helping in the kitchen. If you are interested, please contact Claire the Volunteer Coordinator for WCHP on 01903 227825. CRB checks are required.

Shuffleboard Evening

This was a very enjoyable evening in the newly refitted Priory Refectory.  Forty five people became very competitive as the evening progressed and the excitement mounted.  Nice food, plenty of wine and an excellent profit of £300 for CAFOD funds.

For more photos please go to our Parish Gallery webpage.

Our next event will be a Garden Party on Sunday, 18 July, so look out for tickets in mid-June.

APRIL NEWS

JUBILEE DEBT CAMPAIGN SUCCESS

If you have ever wondered whether sending e-mails and cards to ministers and politicians does any good then please read on!  A recent scandal has been Vulture Funds buying the outstanding debt of poor countries from the original lender for a small amount and then taking the country to the UK courts to make them pay the full value.  The Jubilee Debt Campaign has been working with some MP's to get a Private Members Bill passed into law to stop Vulture Funds profiteering in this disgraceful way but, just before the election was announced, the bill was talked out by an objector.  It looked as though all was lost, despite the support of the party leaders, and Harriet Harman, the Leader of the Commons said there was no time to reintroduce it.

Jubilee Debt supporters were alerted and as a result of determined e-mail campaigning last week, Harriet Harman decided that the bill had 'considerable support in the country' and it was selected for the 'wash up process' with cross party support, at the end of the Parliamentary Session before dissolution.  It was signed into law late on the evening of 8 April.

This campaign victory should mean that we never again have to see a country as poor as Liberia or Zambia sued in a UK court on the basis of debt which dates back to the 1970's and has been bought by a Vulture Fund for pennies in the pound.  Yet again the debt movement has proved that campaigning really works!  Remember Make Poverty History?

If you go to the Jubilee Debt Campaign web site you can sign up for e-mail updates on the efforts to relieve unjust debts in poor countries and help to take action.  Contact Terry Lane (01903 745691) if you would like more information about our parish support for Justice and Peace issues.
