CHRISTIAN AID WEEK

YES….there is something we can all do to help the poorer nations… For the sake of an hour or so in May you could make a difference. With your help (for any time of your choosing) to just deliver Christian Aid envelopes to houses near to you and then collect whatever people choose to give. There is no pressure and there is the added benefit that this is an ecumenical project with all the churches working together for the good of all. If you are willing to help during the week of the 11th to 17th May, please contact Simon Mole (01903 743674) or one of our priests (01903 742150). Alternatively you can place your name and telephone number on the Christian Aid display board in the church porch.

CAFOD needs your help!

Why not join a friendly and enthusiastic network of people who share your vision? CAFOD is the main Catholic agency working in the field of overseas development. We need volunteers to help us reach more of our supporters by speaking at Mass, and campaigning for the rights of the poor. There are also other volunteering opportunities. Experience is not essential: we give excellent training, continuing support and office back up. Further information is available on our web page www.cafod.org.uk or contact CAFOD's A&B Diocesan Office, St John's Seminary, Wonersh, Surrey, GU5 0QX on 01483 898866 or email: arundelandbrighton@cafod.org.uk We would be delighted to meet you and share with you about the wonderful work that CAFOD is involved in. From the CAFOD A&B Diocesan Team.

Mary and Terry Lane from our parish are already CAFOD helpers and would be willing to speak to anyone who is interested about this Tel: (01903) 745691.

‘The World Can’t Wait’ Campaign’

About ten thousand people joined four of our parishioners in London on Saturday 2 June 2007 to send a clear message to world leaders that the promises made at the G8 Summit at Gleneagles two years ago, about increased debt relief and aid for poor countries, must be kept. 575,263 people have sent cards, letters and e-mails prior to the G8 Summit now taking place in Germany. In London, campaigners of all ages gathered under the slogan ‘The World Can’t Wait – Make Aid Work’. CAFOD was there in strength and Cardinal Cormac and our own Bishop Kieran joined people from Tear Fund, Action Aid, Oxfam, Christian Aid and other agencies to hear speeches from prominent aid workers before we moved to the River Thames to form a ring along the banks and across Westminster and Lambeth bridges. At 2.30pm there was a signal from a boat on the river and a two minute silence was followed by a volley of noise, unleashed with alarm clocks, whistles, bells and drums – we know the message was not lost on Tony Blair and his Government, so lets hope the rest of the G8 have listened as well.

TRADE JUSTICE CAMPAIGN

Over 800 people attended the mass rally outside the German Embassy in London on Thursday, 19 April 2007 and Mary and Terry Lane added a Storrington presence.  After some rousing speeches by senior representatives of five of the organisations involved, both here and in Africa, a huge door key was handed in to the embassy to signify our message –

‘Don’t Lock Poor Countries into Poverty’
